1061 Travel Guide

Aranui Cave is the most intricate of the Waitomo cave system, known for dense, well-formed stalactites, stalagmites and draperies. The entrance is hidden in native forest and is reached on a guided walk that passes stairways and narrow passages before opening into a large chamber. Unlike the Waitomo glowworm cave, Aranui's appeal lies in the limestone formations themselves, with lighting designed to bring out the texture and colour of the rock. The cave is cool and damp year-round and the floor is slippery; guided tours generally run about an hour and suit travellers interested in geology and photography.

The Waitomo Visitor Centre in Waitomo village is the information hub for exploring the area's caves and outdoor activities. It offers advice and bookings for cave tours, local track and weather information, and displays explaining Waitomo's karst landscape and glowworm ecology. The timber building sits comfortably among the surrounding bush and rolling limestone hills. Whether you plan to join a glowworm, Ruakuri or Aranui cave tour, or want information on black-water rafting, walks and nearby accommodation, this is the logical starting point — dining and tour meeting points are within walking distance.

Ruakuri Cave is the largest and most complete experience in the Waitomo cave system, entered via a distinctive spiral ramp that winds down underground. Inside are dense glowworm colonies as well as broad chambers, an underground stream and varied limestone formations, along with traces of historic Māori use of the cave. Visits are guided walks, with sections close to the subterranean river where the sound of water echoes off the walls. Where the glowworm cave is viewed by boat, Ruakuri is a more immersive walking experience — good if you want glowworms and cave scenery in one visit.
