Plaza Independencia📍 Montevideo
Plaza Independencia is Montevideo's civic hub and historic axis, straddling the old and new city, its pavement marked with the 'one-peso coin' that signifies the city's Km 0. At its center stands the mausoleum and equestrian statue of José Artigas, the nation's founding father, ringed by the Solís Theatre, the Estévez Palace (former presidential seat) and remnants of the Ciudadela gate into the old town. By night the plaza becomes a stage for strollers and street performers. From here, the Sarandí pedestrian street leads into the old town—the first stop to read Montevideo.
Colonia del Sacramento📍 Colonia
Colonia del Sacramento sits on the northern shore of the Rio de la Plata estuary, facing Buenos Aires across the water. Founded by the Portuguese in 1680, it is Uruguay's oldest city and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1995 — a photogenic maze of cobbled lanes, coloured corrugated rooftops, ivy-draped ruins and colonial stone walls. The old lighthouse by the harbour dates to 1857; climb its 118 steps for views over terracotta rooftops and the silver estuary, with Argentina's shoreline visible on clear days. An hour by ferry from Buenos Aires and entirely walkable, it makes South America's most charming day trip.
Ciudad Vieja📍 Montevideo
Ciudad Vieja (Old City) is the historic core of Montevideo, Uruguay's capital and largest city, founded in 1724 and ranking among the best-preserved colonial-era urban districts in South America. The old city centers on Plaza Independencia, the symbolic heart of the nation, and is surrounded by landmark 18th and 19th-century buildings including the Palacio Salvo, Teatro Solis, Montevideo Metropolitan Cathedral, and the Executive Tower housing the presidential offices. Cobblestone streets are lined with neoclassical and Art Deco buildings, many of which have been thoughtfully converted into museums, boutique hotels, antique shops, and traditional tango bars that reflect the city's rich cultural heritage. In recent years, Ciudad Vieja has experienced a remarkable cultural renaissance, with artist studios, independent coffee shops, contemporary galleries, and craft breweries emerging alongside historic establishments, transforming the area into a vibrant district where Uruguay's colonial past and creative present converge. The neighborhood offers visitors an immersive journey through more than three centuries of South American history, architecture, and urban evolution.
Museo Torres Garcia📍 Montevideo
The Museo Torres Garcia, located in the Ciudad Vieja (Old City) of Montevideo, Uruguay, is a specialized art museum dedicated to preserving and showcasing the work of Joaquin Torres Garcia, Uruguay's most internationally influential modern artist and a pivotal figure in the development of Latin American abstract art. Founded in 1955, the museum holds a collection of over 150 oil paintings, drawings, and carved wooden toys created by the artist, systematically presenting his pioneering theory of "Universalismo Constructivo" (Universal Constructivism) and illuminating the broader trajectory of Latin American modern art. The permanent exhibition is organized chronologically by creative period, tracing Torres Garcia's artistic journey from his Barcelona Modernisme phase, through his Parisian abstract explorations alongside leading European avant-garde artists, to his late-career return to Montevideo where he established his influential workshop and articulated a distinctly Latin American artistic identity. The museum itself is housed in a 19th-century historic building, creating a harmonious setting where architecture and artworks together form a spiritual sanctuary for Uruguayan modern art and an essential destination for scholars and enthusiasts of global modernism.
Casa Pueblo📍 Punta del Este
Casa Blanca (The White House), situated in the heart of Ciudad Vieja (Old City) in Montevideo, Uruguay, is one of the most representative colonial-era historic buildings in this South American port capital. Constructed in the late 18th century, the building is distinguished by its pristine white exterior walls and Spanish colonial-style arcades, and historically served as a venue for important political meetings during Uruguay's independence movement. The interior has been converted into a museum that displays period furniture from the colonial era, artifacts from the wars of independence, and foundational documents of the Uruguayan republic, with multimedia exhibitions narrating the evolution of Montevideo from a Spanish colonial outpost to a modern democratic nation. The central courtyard preserves its original fountain and ancient olive trees, offering a rare tranquil historical oasis within the bustling urban environment. Casa Blanca stands as an important architectural and cultural landmark that provides visitors with tangible connections to Uruguay's colonial past, its struggle for independence, and the political and social transformations that shaped the nation's identity over more than two centuries of history.
La Rambla (Montevideo)📍 Montevideo
Montevideo's Rambla stretches about 22 km along the Rio de la Plata, running from the old city to the eastern beaches — one of the world's longest urban waterfront promenades and the backbone of local life. Joggers and cyclists take the morning breeze; by dusk the lawns and seawall belong to anglers, dog-walking families and mate-drinking regulars. Tired legs can stop at a waterfront bar for a medio y medio sparkling white and watch the sun sink into the river's muddy, mellow waters. Swimming is off the menu here — the water is shallow and silty — but for strolling, people-watching and slow South American evenings, nothing beats it. Pocitos beach, Punta Carretas and the old city wall string along its course.
