Cape Coast Travel Guide

Elmina Castle (St. George's Castle), in the coastal town of Elmina in central Ghana, was built by the Portuguese in 1482 and is considered the earliest European building in sub-Saharan Africa. It was one of the largest trans-shipment points of the Atlantic slave trade, where countless Africans were held in dungeons before being transported across the Atlantic. Today it is a UNESCO World Heritage site, a place of remembrance and education, and the location of the 'Door of No Return'.

Cape Coast Castle stands by the sea in the city of Cape Coast, Ghana. Begun in 1653 and built first by the Swedes, it later came under British control. It was a central trans-shipment point of the West African Atlantic slave trade, a seat of British West African officials, and at one time also used as a school. Today it is the Central/Western Regional Headquarters of the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board (GMMB), a UNESCO World Heritage site, and an important memorial place for understanding the history of African enslavement and for 'roots tourism'.
