Kariba Travel Guide

Fishing for tiger fish and cruising to see wildlife on Zimbabwe's world-class reservoir.

📍 Destination Overview

Kariba is a town on the Zambezi River in northern Zimbabwe, defined by Lake Kariba, formed when the Kariba Dam was built between 1955 and 1959 and today one of the largest man-made lakes by volume in the world - about 220 km long and over 5,500 square kilometres, widening to face Zambia across the water. It is renowned for tiger fishing, wildlife-viewing cruises and luxury houseboat charters, while the nearby Matusadona National Park shelters animals rescued and released during Operation Noah. In the dry season, herds of buffalo and elephants gather along the shoreline to drink.
