Lake Victoria is Africa's largest lake and the source of the Nile; Kenya's shores are known for fishing villages and golden sunsets. Boat trips reach islets and bird colonies on the water — the broadest, gentlest meeting of water and sky on the East African plateau. Kisumu to the east is the gateway to the lake; ferries and fish markets pulse with the everyday rhythm of Africa's largest water.

Kisumu Museum stands in the lakeside city on Victoria's shore, strong on Luo and neighbouring peoples' culture, with reconstructed traditional huts and the endangered Rift Valley giant frog in its garden. It is the best start to understand western Kenya's gateway and lake-side life. Traditional village displays and pottery workshops outside let you touch western Kenya's tribal life and craft firsthand.

The Kisumu Impala Sanctuary, in Kisumu in western Kenya, lies on the shores of Lake Victoria and covers less than 1 square kilometre. Originally established to protect threatened impalas, it now hosts both free-ranging and enclosed wildlife, and is a fine spot for birdwatching (including many waterbirds) and lakeside leisure, just about 3 km from Kisumu city centre.
