At dusk you ride camels deep into the desert, camping by a Berber fire beneath a star-filled sky with drumming and mint tea, then climb the dunes for sunrise; 4x4 and sandboarding add thrills.

Merzouga is the gateway to Morocco's Sahara: just beyond the village rise the Erg Chebbi dunes, orange-red ridges up to 150 metres high that run to the Algerian border. Merzouga is the classic gateway into the Sahara; the best seasons are March–April and October–November; June–August is scorching above 40°C, not for long stays, and with an extreme day-night temperature swing you need extra layers morning and evening. The classic experience is a dusk camel ride into the Erg Chebbi dunes and an overnight at a Berber camp to see the Milky Way and sunrise. Camps have limited power, so bring a power bank. Most travelers come from Ouarzazate or Fes.
