Tozeur Travel Guide

Tozeur is an oasis city in southwestern Tunisia, on the edge of the Sahara and beside Chott el Djerid, the gateway to the Sahara, salt lakes, mountain oases and Star Wars filming sites, famed for its vast palm oasis, unique yellow-brick old city and magnificent desert scenery, with the most pleasant climate in the cool season (Oct-Apr), avoiding the scorching peak summer (up to 42C). Thanks to underground springs, the desert holds a vast, verdant palm-grove oasis (hundreds of thousands of date palms, producing famed Tunisian dates), a striking contrast with the yellow sand, which you can explore by carriage. The old city's houses are built of pale-yellow bricks arranged in relief into exquisite geometric patterns - archaic and elegant. From here you can visit the boundless Chott el Djerid with its salt crust and frequent mirages, the mountain-waterfall oases (Chebika, Tamerza), and the famous Star Wars Tatooine filming sites in the desert; you can also ride camels deep into the Sahara dunes and camp under the stars.
