Sucre Travel Guide

Casa de la Libertad stands beside the central square of Sucre, Bolivia's constitutional capital, and is one of the most important buildings in the country's independence history. This 18th-century colonial mansion originally served as a Jesuit college and later as the seat of the Royal Audiencia. On August 6, 1825, the Bolivian Declaration of Independence was signed here, marking Upper Peru's separation from Spanish rule and the birth of an independent republic. The museum preserves the Salon of Independence with the original table and chairs and a copy of the signed document, and displays colonial furniture, religious art, silverware and historical paintings that trace Bolivia's political and social evolution from colony to nation, making it a key site for understanding South American independence and Bolivia's founding.
