📍 Destination Overview
Calama, a mining city in Chile's Atacama desert at 2,260m, is the gateway to the world's driest desert. Its airport links to Santiago, and the astronomy town of San Pedro de Atacama is twenty minutes away. Ringed by mountains, with dry air and little light pollution, it is a top stargazing site. Most travellers stay a night before heading to Moon Valley, salt flats and volcanoes.

Calama is visitable year-round with superb stargazing almost every night; March–November brings clearer skies and comfortable temperatures, ideal for desert and astronomical activities. Winter (June–August) offers warm days, frozen nights and the best sky season — pack warm layers. Most travellers use it as the staging post for San Pedro de Atacama and the Valley of the Moon: arrive in the morning, ride into the dunes, watch sunset at the Valley of the Moon and stargaze on the way back — one night under the Milky Way often crowns a whole South American trip. A spare half-day easily covers the mining museum, desert oases and high-road scenery. At about 2,260m, keep activity light and drink plenty of water. Costs stay modest. This gritty mining town is the practical doorway to some of the finest dark skies on Earth.
