La Sebastiana is the home of Pablo Neruda, the Nobel laureate and one of Chile's greatest poets, in Valparaíso. Perched high on a hillside in the city, it is one of his three residences in Chile (the others in Santiago and Isla Negra). Plaza Sotomayor is the port square of Valparaíso, its centre holding the monument to the heroes of the Battle of Iquique, ringed by the town hall, navy headquarters and other historic buildings. Funiculars leave from here and the waterfront is steps away — the natural start of a city tour.

Cerro Alegre is the hillside old quarter of Valparaiso, Chile's cultural capital, twinned with Cerro Concepcion as the city's painted hills. Brightly painted tin houses stack along steep steps and zigzag lanes, layered with street art until every wall is a canvas and every corner a gallery. Near the summit sits La Sebastiana, one of Nobel laureate Pablo Neruda's homes, where the poet spent his later years writing above the bay — the rooms and cellar keep his spirit alive. Century-old funiculars (ascensores) creak up and down the slopes, the most nostalgic way to ride a UNESCO city. Best of all is simply getting lost: winding stair lanes, craft markets, and a hilltop mirador at sunset as the bay turns gold and the lights come on.

Cerro Concepción is one of Valparaíso's most iconic hills, linked with Cerro Alegre to form the heart of the UNESCO-listed old quarter. Colourful houses, murals and miradors (viewpoints) scatter across the steep, charming lanes — a paradise for walking and photography.
