📍 Destination Overview
Berat, on both banks of the Osum in central Albania, is its best-preserved Ottoman city, a UNESCO site. White houses climb the steep slopes, their wooden-grid windows like hundreds of eyes, giving it the City of a Thousand Windows, loveliest at dusk. Old Muslim and Christian quarters link by a stone bridge. The still-inhabited Kala Castle crowns the hill above the old town and valley.

Berat is a UNESCO Ottoman old town on both banks of the Osum River valley, famous for its layered white houses with dense wooden windows overlooking the river like thousands of eyes, earning it the name City of a Thousand Windows; spring and autumn (May-Jun and Sep-Oct) are best (avoid midsummer). On the two banks are the old quarters of Mangalem and Gorica, linked by an ancient stone bridge; the thousand-window panorama viewed from across the river is most moving. Atop the hill, the medieval Berat Castle is still home to generations of residents - a living castle; climb to the top for a panorama of the town and river valley. The old town has steep slopes and many stone steps, so wear comfortable shoes. It is about 2 hrs from Tirana.
