Veliko Tarnovo is a medieval capital ringed by the Yantra River gorge, the royal city (City of the Tsars) of the Second Bulgarian Empire, best from May to September. The signature sights are the red-roofed houses stacked tier upon tier along both valley banks and the Tsarevets medieval royal fortress atop a riverside hill — on certain nights a spectacular sound-and-light show recreates the empire's rise and fall (check show times). The Samovodska craftsmen's street shows traditional crafts. About 3 hours from Sofia.
