📍 Destination Overview

Potsdam, on the River Havel south-west of Berlin and capital of Brandenburg, is bound to the Prussian royal house. It is known for grand Sanssouci Palace, Frederick the Great's hillside vineyard retreat, a UNESCO site with its gardens. Stroll the ornamental grounds.
Lake boat

Old-town ride

Potsdam is at its finest from May to September, when Sanssouci's terraced gardens are lush and flowering and lake trips and cycling are in full swing. Recommended: glide in by S-Bahn from Berlin in the morning, head straight to Sanssouci and climb the vineyard terraces to the palace; wander the New Palace and Dutch Quarter in the afternoon, or hire a bike for a loop along the Havel and the lakes; history buffs won't skip the 1945 Potsdam Conference site at Cecilienhof. Compact and unhurried, a day covers the essentials and two days feel more relaxed. Prices run a touch below Berlin, but book Sanssouci and top sights online in advance. Palaces, lakes and courtly whimsy make this 'Berlin's garden city' both modern and steeped in charm.
