The adjacent Hohenzollern Bridge is covered in lovers' padlocks, spanning the Rhine. Each February, the Cologne Carnival turns this solemn old city into a sea of revelry.

The Minoritenkirche is a Gothic mendicant church in Cologne's old town, its foundations laid in the thirteenth century, tucked along Minoritenstraße just steps from the Rhine and the Alter Markt. Damaged in the Second World War, it was restored in a deliberately spare manner - pale walls and clustered columns make the space strikingly austere - while baroque elements around the high altar survived. Where the cathedral overwhelms, this church shows the restrained side of Cologne's religious architecture.

Opened in 1998 as KölnArena and renamed Lanxess Arena in 2008, this is Germany's largest multi-purpose indoor venue, seating up to around twenty thousand for concerts. It stands in the Deutz fair district on the right bank of the Rhine next to the exhibition halls. The Kölner Haie ice hockey club calls it home, and handball powerhouse THW Kiel regularly stages matches here - for travellers, a hockey night beats a look at the facade.

Opened to traffic in 1959, the Severinsbrücke was the first new Rhine crossing built in Cologne after the war, and its 69-metre A-shaped pylon still marks the southern skyline. The deck links the Severinsviertel on the left bank with Deutz, carrying light rail tracks beside a walkway. Looking back from mid-span, the cathedral and the old-town towers line up perfectly - one of the city's postcard views - and at dusk the silhouette of the cable-stayed pylon photographs beautifully.

The Taubenbrunnen is a small sculptural fountain in the lanes of Cologne's old town, its bronze pigeons echoing the real flocks that gather around the Alter Markt. It takes minutes to see and costs nothing - a whimsical photo stop folded into a walk between the market square and the Rhine promenade rather than a destination of its own.

Named for its founding year of 1810, this small Cologne workshop keeps the city's traditional mustard trade alive: millstones, wooden tubs and old seasoning tools still work, and visitors can watch mustard seeds travel from hopper to grinder to jar. The attached shop invites tasting across a range of flavours before you buy, with the classic mildly hot local recipe the favourite. It is less a museum than a flavorful market interlude, easy to attach to an old-town itinerary.

Laid out in 1864 in the Riehl district on the left bank of the Rhine and bordering Cologne Zoo, the Flora is the city's beloved back garden - locals simply say they are 'going to the Flora'. Its historic glass conservatory, a nineteenth-century structure rebuilt to its original form after wartime damage, still hosts functions and events. Across roughly a dozen hectares the free garden runs themed sections from alpine rockeries to Mediterranean and aquatic plantings, busiest during the rhododendron spring and the June roses.

Spring and summer (May-Sep) have the most pleasant weather. The February Carnival (Rose Monday) is a city-wide event with large crowds; book accommodation early. The year-end Christmas market beside the cathedral is cosy. The tower climb has many steps and requires stamina.
