Trier is best visited from April to October, when the great Roman remains and outdoor walks are at their most inviting; September–October adds Moselle grape-harvest wine with autumn colour, and December fills its market with cheer. A compact day suffices: enter through the Porta Nigra along the old Roman road, visit the cathedral, imperial baths and amphitheatre among the linked ruins, then stroll or boat along the Moselle, tasting local white wine at a waterside winery. Small and walkable, it doubles as a natural stopover to or from Luxembourg, with easy onward trips to Koblenz and the Moselle. Affordable and unhurried, Trier proves the claim 'Rome of the North' is no exaggeration.
