Ples is a small town on Russia's Volga River in Ivanovo Oblast, founded in 1410 and often called Russia's loveliest Volga town. It inspired the landscapes of Isaac Levitan, whose works are shown in the Levitan Museum. The Assumption Cathedral and old wooden houses feel serene, and viewpoints overlook the winding river. A town where Russian painters found inspiration.

Isaac Levitan House Museum
The House-Museum of Isaac Levitan stands in Plyos, a small town on the Volga where the great Russian landscape painter spent the summers of 1888 to 1890. It was here, in a riverside wooden house, that he produced masterpieces such as Evening. Golden Plyos and Golden Autumn. The upstairs rooms keep his easel, piano and original furnishings, while the ground floor traces his life through photographs and reproductions. The town's quiet church-bell views inspired some of Levitan's most serene canvases.
