No.1
Arecibo Observatory
The Arecibo Observatory was a world-famous radio astronomy facility set in a karst sinkhole among the hills of northern Puerto Rico. Its iconic 305-metre fixed spherical dish, built in 1963, was for decades the largest single-aperture radio telescope on Earth. It joined the search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI), mapped Venus by radar, helped discover binary pulsars that supported indirect evidence for gravitational waves, and became pop-culture famous through 'Contact' and 'GoldenEye'. In December 2020 the suspended platform and receiver collapsed, destroying the instrument. Puerto Rico and U.S. science communities are repurposing the site as an education and research centre. Today's visitor centre keeps science exhibits, telescope models, archive footage and a viewing platform, telling the story of half a century of discovery and a feat of Caribbean mountain engineering. For astronomy and engineering fans it remains a site of real historical weight.

No.2
The Arecibo Lighthouse and Historical Park
The Arecibo Lighthouse and Historical Park sits on Punta Los Morrillos at the western end of Arecibo in northern Puerto Rico, blending a coastal lighthouse, history museums and family fun. The lighthouse was built in 1898 on the eve of the Spanish-American War, a key aid to navigation from the late Spanish colonial period through U.S. administration, and still guides the coastline. The park is loved for being educational and accessible: climb the spiral stairs for Atlantic and reef views; explore recreated Taino villages, colonial forts and maritime history in exhibits and models; and enjoy a small zoo, kids' play area and trails leading to a calm swimming beach. It satisfies history and lighthouse buffs while suiting families for a half-day outing — a high-value coastal culture stop near Arecibo.
