Pilsen lies in western Bohemia in the Czech Republic, birthplace of the world's lager. In 1842 the citizens' brewery brewed the first pale lager, whose hoppy aroma defined the world's most popular beer style. The brewery keeps its craft, with nine kilometers of cellars; a museum recounts brewing history, and Saint Bartholomew Cathedral has the country's tallest tower.
