The Moravian Karst, roughly 25 kilometres north of Brno, is the Czech Republic's largest protected karst region, with over a thousand caves threaded through forests and gorges. Freedom Square (náměstí Svobody) is the central square of Brno's old town and the liveliest, most vibrant heart of this Moravian city — the perfect place to feel Brno's urban pulse and civic life. Crowning Petrov hill above Brno's old town, the Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul defines the city's skyline. Its roots reach back to the Middle Ages, though the twin neo-Gothic towers, about 84 metres tall, were finished around the turn of the twentieth century. Local legend says that during the 1645 Swedish siege, when the enemy vowed to withdraw at noon, Brno's bells rang noon an hour early and the Swedes marched away; to this day the cathedral tolls midday at 11:00. Standing by the Old Town Hall on Zelný trh, the Brno astronomical clock is a public artwork unveiled in 2010. Shaped like a giant black bullet some six metres tall, its dark silhouette clashes theatrically with the Baroque square, and while locals mocked it at first, it has become a quirky city icon. Every day at 11 a.m. the clock releases a glass marble to one lucky onlooker, echoing the same siege legend that makes Petrov's bells ring noon an hour early.
