📍 Destination Overview
Litomyšl lies in eastern Czechia, a tranquil and elegant historic small town whose perfectly preserved Renaissance castle is a World Heritage Site. The 16th-century castle's exterior is covered in exquisite sgraffito decoration — thousands of square patterns hand-scraped into the plaster, delicate and magnificent, a masterpiece of Central European Renaissance architecture, and the castle also preserves a Baroque theatre that stands to this day. This is also the birthplace of the famous Czech composer Bedřich Smetana; his home is right next to the castle, and every summer the Smetana Music Festival draws many music lovers. The long and narrow historic square is lined on both sides with softly coloured arcaded buildings, quaint and elegant. Compared with the bustle of Prague, Litomyšl feels more tranquil and authentic, a charming place to savour the flavour of a Bohemian small town.
