📍 Destination Overview
Zagreb is the capital of Croatia, lying inland on the Sava River, a laid-back, pleasant city full of Central European charm, distinctly different from the Mediterranean feel of the coast. The city is woven from two parts: the historic Upper Town (Gornji Grad) and the bustling Lower Town (Donji Grad). Walking through the medieval Upper Town, you pass the old Stone Gate (housing an icon of the Virgin Mary said to have survived a fire), then come to the most photographed St. Mark's Church — its roof is tiled in colourful slabs forming the coats of arms of Croatia and Zagreb, bright and striking; nearby, the Lotrščak Tower fires a cannon every day at noon, and the Museum of Broken Relationships tells moving stories with tokens of heartbreak from around the world, utterly unique. The Lower Town's Ban Jelačić Square is the city's heart, the Dolac open-air market is vibrant with colour, and Neoclassical museums, theatres and parkland stretch out. The café culture here is deep; sitting in the sun on weekends is a local ritual. Every year, the Zagreb Christmas Market has been voted the best in Europe several times. The colourful rooftop church, leisurely cafés and vibrant market make Zagreb warm and livable.
