Zadar sits on a peninsula in the northern Dalmatian coast, an ancient sea city of three thousand years of history, where layers of Roman, Venetian and modern traces intertwine — yet it is two creative modern-art installations that have made the world remember it. The Sea Organ by the sea is a stretch of seemingly ordinary white marble steps, but hidden pipes beneath mean that when the waves of the Adriatic roll in, they push air to produce low, resonant, ever-changing music — people sit on the steps listening to the sea improvise, incredibly romantic. Adjacent, the Greeting to the Sun is a giant disc of solar panels; by day it stores energy, and after dark it transforms with the Sea Organ's music into brilliant, shifting lights. And the most moving moment of all is dusk — the film master Hitchcock once praised Zadar as having the most beautiful sunset in the world. In the old town are also the remains of the Roman Forum, the round Church of St. Donatus and the Venetian city gate. The music of the sea breeze, the brilliant lights and the stunning sunset make Zadar romantic and unique.
