Kuldīga is an exceptionally well-preserved World Heritage old town on the Venta River in western Latvia; summer, May-Sep, is best. It is famous for two wonders: the Venta Waterfall spanning the river, about 249 metres wide, the widest waterfall in Europe, and every spring and autumn during the fish migration season shoals of fish leap through the air over the falls in the wonder of flying fish; next to it the ancient red-brick bridge is one of Europe's longest brick road bridges. The old town is full of 17th- and 18th-century wooden and red-brick houses. About 2 hours from Riga; self-drive recommended.
