Šiauliai is the fourth-largest city in northern Lithuania, but what truly made this city world-famous is an unremarkable hill about twelve kilometers outside the city — the Hill of Crosses (Kryžių kalnas). It is one of the most unique and awe-inspiring pilgrimage sites in Lithuania and the world: on this hill and around it, hundreds of thousands of crosses are densely and layer upon layer planted and hung — from giant wooden and metal crosses several meters tall, to thousands upon thousands of tiny rosaries and miniature crosses hanging on the large ones, of all sizes and shapes, almost covering the entire hill. Standing among them, the wind rustles through the crosses and rosaries with a faint sound — solemn, stirring and moving. The history of these crosses dates back to the 19th century, when Lithuanians erected crosses here to commemorate loved ones who died in uprisings and struggles, and to express faith and mourning. During the Soviet era, the authorities several times bulldozed all the crosses on the hill, yet time and again, with unyielding resilience, Lithuanians re-erected the crosses in the night, making this place a powerful symbol of Lithuania's religious freedom, national resilience and indomitable spirit.
