📍 Destination Overview

Cluj-Napoca (usually shortened to Cluj) lies in the northwest of Transylvania and is Romania's second-largest city, the unofficial capital and economic, cultural and educational center of Transylvania, often called the Heart of Transylvania. It is a city brimming with youthful energy and vitality thanks to its university: Babes-Bolyai University is one of Romania's largest and most prestigious universities, and tens of thousands of students give the city a young, stylish and creative character, with cafes, bars, bookstores and clubs everywhere, rich street art and cultural festivals, and in recent years it has become Romania's booming tech and startup hub (dubbed little Silicon Valley), with the annual summer electronic music festival drawing huge crowds of young people. The historic core is the broad Union Square (Piata Unirii), at its center the towering St. Michael's Church - one of Romania's most important Gothic churches, whose soaring spire is a city landmark, beside it the equestrian statue of King Matthias Corvinus (born in this city). The city also has Baroque palaces, a botanical garden and the Cetatuia Hill overlooking everything. Historic churches, a youthful university and vibrant energy make Cluj lively and modern, the western gateway to a Transylvanian journey.
