Chisinau is the capital and largest city of Moldova, nestled among the hills along the Bâc River. It is the country's political, economic and cultural center — a verdant, tranquil and unpretentious Eastern European city full of local life, and the gateway to exploring this wine-famous nation. Chisinau's most distinctive trait is its greenery: the city is renowned for its abundant vegetation, with large parks, green spaces and tree-lined boulevards spread across it, leafy trees lining the wide streets, and a leisurely pace of life that makes a stroll peaceful and pleasant — a true green city. The heart of the city is the area around Cathedral Park in the center: here stands Chisinau's core landmark — the Nativity Cathedral, a 19th-century Neoclassical Orthodox cathedral, and its free-standing bell tower. At the entrance to the park stands an elegant Triumphal Arch (Holy Gates / Arcul de Triumf); this white stone arch is the city's iconic structure, together with the cathedral and government buildings behind it forming the dignified and beautiful city-center vista. The park is shaded by trees and full of blooming flowers, with a lively flower market. The city's main axis is the wide Ștefan cel Mare Boulevard, lined with government offices, theaters, museums, shops and cafés, and in the adjacent Ștefan cel Mare Park stands a statue of Ștefan cel Mare, Moldova's national hero. The city also has the National History Museum, the tranquil Lake Park, and distinctive old-town neighborhoods. As a gateway, just outside Chisinau lie world-famous underground wine cellars such as Cricova and Milestii Mici, the starting point for wine-tasting tours. With its leafy parks, elegant Triumphal Arch and wine-country gateway, Chisinau is tranquil and pleasant, best enjoyed from May to September in spring, summer and autumn.
