📍 Destination Overview

Monaco-Ville (also called the Old Town or Le Rocher, 'the Rock') is the oldest and most historic district of the Principality of Monaco, perched atop a towering rocky promontory surrounded on three sides by the Mediterranean and overlooking the entire country and bay — a natural fortress that is the historic birthplace and political heart of this tiny city-state, ancient and solemn, in sharp contrast to the modern luxury of Monte Carlo below. The core and symbol of Monaco-Ville is the Prince's Palace of Monaco, home of the Grimaldi family — Monaco is a monarchy ruled by one of the world's oldest reigning dynasties, and this palace, built atop the rock in the Middle Ages, has for centuries been the official residence and seat of power of Monaco's princes and remains the current prince's home, venerable and majestic. Before the palace lies an open square overlooking the harbor and city, and each noon a traditional Changing of the Guard takes place — ceremonially dressed guards exchange posts to orders, a classic scene visitors flock to watch (some palace rooms open in summer). In the old town also stands the Cathedral of Monaco, a white Roman-Byzantine stone cathedral where Grimaldi family members wed and are buried; most beloved is Grace Kelly, the Hollywood star who became Princess of Monaco, who rests here, drawing many respectful visitors. The old town also has narrow, quaint cobblestone lanes, souvenir shops and the Saint-Martin Gardens. With its majestic palace, solemn guard change and reverent cathedral, Monaco-Ville feels ancient and weighty, best enjoyed in April–June and September–October.

Monaco-Ville (Le Rocher, the Rock) is the old town atop a rocky height surrounded by sea on three sides and overlooking the whole country — Monaco's historic birthplace and political heart, in contrast to the luxurious Monte Carlo below, best in April–June and September–October. Its core is the Grimaldi Prince's Palace — the official residence of one of the world's oldest reigning dynasties, built in the Middle Ages and still the prince's home, with a traditional noon guard change daily (some rooms open in summer). The Roman-Byzantine Cathedral of Monaco is where the royal family weds and is buried; beloved Grace Kelly, the film star who became princess, rests here — visit with respect. The old town also has cobblestone lanes and the Saint-Martin Gardens. The euro is used and it is pricey; all prices are for reference.
