A World Heritage old city on the Alentejo plains—the ruined columns of the Roman temple, the striking Chapel of Bones and the walled old town, an inland historic city layered with Roman and medieval history.

📍 Destination Overview

Évora sits on the vast plains of Alentejo in southern Portugal; it is a historic walled city and the entire old town is listed as a World Heritage site. It preserves the Roman-era Temple of Diana, where several Corinthian columns still stand after two thousand years—one of the best-preserved Roman remains on the Iberian Peninsula. Inside the Church of São Francisco, the Chapel of Bones is made of thousands of human bones and skulls set into the walls, with an entrance inscription reading 'Our bones are here waiting for yours,' a thought-provoking sight. Within the walls, the stone streets, the cathedral and the Praça do Giraldo are simple and elegant, while outside the city lie prehistoric megalithic stones older than Britain's Stonehenge. The layered deposits of Roman, medieval and prehistoric history give Évora a deep historical charm.

No.1 Évora
Praça do Giraldo
Praça do Giraldo is the heart of Évora's old town, a stage for markets, festivals and trials since the Middle Ages — the Inquisition once raised its stake here. Arcaded whitewashed buildings frame the square, and a Renaissance fountain at its centre once supplied the city's water. Today it is the best starting point for coffee, people-watching and wandering the UNESCO-listed town.

No.2 Évora
Cathedral of Evora
The Cathedral of Évora (Sé de Évora), in the historic centre of Évora, is the largest medieval cathedral in Portugal. Begun in the late 12th century and largely completed by the mid-13th, it marks the transition from Romanesque to Gothic, with two asymmetrical towers and a Gothic portal and rose window. Inside are notable religious artworks and a museum of sacred art with sculpture, silver and textiles; the cloister and tower offer views over Évora's whitewashed old town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

No.3 Évora
Capela dos Ossos
The Chapel of Bones lies within the Church of São Francisco in Évora's old town — a macabre chapel whose walls are thickly decorated with human bones and skulls. In the 16th century Franciscan monks built its niches, columns and vaults from thousands of skeletons taken from overcrowded cemeteries, and an inscription at the entrance soberly reminds visitors of the transience of life. In its shadow and silence, the chapel is at once a solemn space for meditation on death and a reflection of the Baroque mind's complex thoughts on eternity, vanity and redemption.
