📍 Destination Overview
Évora sits on the vast plains of Alentejo in southern Portugal; it is a historic walled city and the entire old town is listed as a World Heritage site. It preserves the Roman-era Temple of Diana, where several Corinthian columns still stand after two thousand years—one of the best-preserved Roman remains on the Iberian Peninsula. Inside the Church of São Francisco, the Chapel of Bones is made of thousands of human bones and skulls set into the walls, with an entrance inscription reading 'Our bones are here waiting for yours,' a thought-provoking sight. Within the walls, the stone streets, the cathedral and the Praça do Giraldo are simple and elegant, while outside the city lie prehistoric megalithic stones older than Britain's Stonehenge. The layered deposits of Roman, medieval and prehistoric history give Évora a deep historical charm.
