No.1 Funchal
Monte Toboggan
The Monte Toboggan is Madeira's unique traditional ride — wicker-and-wood sledges steered by two white-clad 'carreiros' who glide about two kilometres down the hill from Monte church to Funchal. Surviving from the 19th century, it is both a nostalgic mode of transport and a laughing, thrilling experience, ending where you can ride the cable car back uphill.

Madeira Botanical Garden
The Madeira Botanical Garden spreads across a hillside northeast of Funchal with some 35,000 plants — a window onto the biodiversity of this 'garden island' of the Atlantic. Themed sections show endemic and endangered species, cacti and tropical blooms, and the terrace over Funchal bay is enchanting. Wandering here cools you in shade while revealing Madeira's microclimates and plant-conservation story.

Mercado dos Lavradores
The Mercado dos Lavradores stands in the old heart of Funchal, capital of the Madeira archipelago — a colourful market hall with elegant arcades. On the ground floor the flower section fills the air with scent and is famed for the vivid red 'bird-of-paradise' blooms, while the fish and produce stalls reveal the Atlantic island's abundance and the daily life of its fishers. Weaving through the bustling stands is the perfect way to feel Madeira's street-level spirit, shop for local specialities and capture candid human moments.

No.4 Funchal
Episcopal Sé Cathedral
The Cathedral of Funchal (Sé do Funchal) stands in the old town of Funchal on the island of Madeira. Begun in the late 15th century, it is one of the island's earliest religious buildings and the seat of the Diocese of Funchal. Built of dark volcanic stone, it blends late Gothic and Manueline styles, with a tall bell tower. Inside, the cedar coffered ceiling in Mudéjar style is the highlight, along with a richly decorated high altar, Flemish paintings and a silver cross. The cathedral reflects Funchal's prosperity as an Atlantic trading port in the Age of Discovery.
