Lauterbrunnen lies in a U-shaped glacial valley in the Bernese Oberland, 72 waterfalls plunging down its cliffs, its name meaning loud springs valley. Staubbach Falls drops some 300 meters, Switzerland's highest free-fall waterfall. The village is the gateway to the Schilthorn and Jungfrau, with car-free Wengen and Murren above, the hiking and skiing hub of the Jungfrau region.
