Montreux sits on the northeast shore of Lake Geneva and is known as the Swiss Riviera; sheltered by the lake and mountains, it has a mild climate and palm-lined avenues. On the lakeside flower-path promenade stands a statue of the lead singer of Queen, a place beloved by many musicians. Every July, the Montreux Jazz Festival is a world-class musical event. Chillon Castle in the lake is Switzerland's most-visited historic monument, its reflection on the water dreamlike, and it inspired Byron's poem. Behind the city lie the UNESCO-listed Lavaux vineyard terraces; you can ride the GoldenPass Line through the lake-and-mountain scenery. It is a lakeside resort and a haven of music and art.

During the July jazz festival it is liveliest and room rates are highest—book very early. Summer (May–Sep) by the lake is mild and pleasant, and in autumn the Lavaux vineyards turn golden. The GoldenPass Line and cruises offer superb views. Switzerland is pricey.
