The Lavaux Vineyard Terraces are a magnificent vineyard stretching about 30 km along the steep north shore of Lake Geneva between Montreux and Lausanne, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2007. Since the 11th century, monks terraced this sunny slope with stone walls into layered vineyards—nearly a thousand years. Called enjoying 'three suns'—direct sky light, lake reflection and stone-wall heat storage—the unique conditions breed fine white wine (notably the Chasselas grape). The green terraces rise from the lakeshore to the hills, with blue Lake Geneva and the opposite Alps snow peaks—a picturesque scene. Visitors take trains or a sightseeing train through the terraces, stroll the vineyard paths, and visit traditional cellars to taste local wine. Lake, terraces and wine together make Lavaux a poetic World Heritage spot near Montreux.
