Niš lies in southern Serbia on the banks of the Nišava River. It is Serbia's third-largest city and the hub of the south — an ancient city with nearly 2,000 years of history, sitting on a key Balkan crossroads. What Niš is proudest of is being the birthplace of the Roman emperor Constantine the Great: this great ruler, who in the 4th century issued the Edict of Milan recognizing Christianity and founded Constantinople, was born here (ancient Naissus). On the city's outskirts, Mediana preserves the ruins of his lavish imperial palace with its fine mosaic floors. At the city center stands the well-preserved Niš Fortress of the Ottoman Empire; its massive walls and gates enclose a leafy park where locals now relax, the heart of the old town. The most somber and thought-provoking site in Niš is the Skull Tower (Ćele Kula): in the early 19th century, after Serbs were defeated nearby in the first uprising against Ottoman rule, the Ottoman authorities built the skulls of the fallen rebels into the walls of a tower to terrify and warn the Serb population. Far from breaking their spirit, this cruel tower became a tragic symbol of the Serb people's unyielding fight for freedom. It is now carefully preserved inside a memorial chapel where visitors pay their respects to that heavy history (please visit with reverence and in silence). The birthplace of Constantine, the Ottoman fortress and the tragic Skull Tower give Niš its depth and gravity.
