Novi Sad sits on the Danube in the Vojvodina plain of northern Serbia. It is Serbia's second-largest city — an elegant, diverse city full of culture and youthful energy, once named a European Capital of Culture. Its landmark is the Petrovaradin Fortress, perched high on a rocky cliff across the Danube: a vast 17th–18th-century Austrian star fortress, grand in scale with sturdy bastions and deep tunnel networks, known as the 'Gibraltar of the Danube.' From its walls you can overlook the Danube and the red-roofed old town opposite. On the clock tower stands a unique 'drunk clock' whose hour and minute hands are swapped (long hand shows the hour, short hand the minute), said to let boatmen on the river read the time from afar. The old town centers on the elegant Liberty Square (Trg Slobode), beside which rise the neo-Gothic Name of Mary Church and a Renaissance-style town hall, surrounded by softly colored Baroque and Art Nouveau buildings, pedestrian streets and cafés — refined and relaxed. What made Novi Sad famous across Europe's youth is the EXIT electronic music festival held every July at the Petrovaradin Fortress — one of Europe's most famous and largest festivals, drawing hundreds of thousands of fans who party through the night among the starlit walls. The cliff-side fortress, the legend of the drunk clock and the music revelry make Novi Sad elegant and young, often visited together with Belgrade.
