Subotica sits at the far north of Serbia, on the Vojvodina plain right by the Hungarian border. It is Serbia's fifth-largest city — a diverse border town with a Central European flavor quite unlike the south, where Hungarians, Serbs, Croats and others mingle and Hungarian culture runs deep. Its most charming, unique feature is a dazzling collection of Art Nouveau (Secession) buildings: in the early 20th century, this then-prosperous Austro-Hungarian city enjoyed a golden age of architecture, and Hungarian master builders raised many masterpieces here. The brightest jewel is Subotica City Hall — a grand building of bold curves, vivid colors, roof and façade clad in famous Hungarian Zsolnay glazed tiles, and splendid stained glass. The Synagogue, designed by the same masters, is among the finest Art Nouveau buildings anywhere, with an elegant dome, intricate floral ornament and luminous stained glass — one of the most beautiful synagogues surviving in Europe. The city's Liberty Square, Blue Fountain and old streets are equally refined. About 10 km out lies the lovely Lake Palić resort, with Art Nouveau villas, a water tower and parks along the shore — a relaxed retreat. Dazzling Art Nouveau, a diverse border town and lakeside leisure give Subotica its special charm.
