Úbeda Travel Guide

The Iglesia de El Salvador is the foremost Renaissance religious building in Úbeda, begun around 1536 to designs by Andrés de Vandelvira and patronized by Francisco de los Cobos, secretary of Emperor Charles V. Facing Plaza Vázquez de Molina, its façade is renowned for finely carved Plateresque decoration; inside, the most striking feature is a domed funerary chapel holding the tomb of de los Cobos and lit from above by a central oculus. Together with Baeza it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2003 as part of the Renaissance Monumental Ensembles of Úbeda and Baeza, a pinnacle of Andalusian Renaissance architecture.
