Medieval rivals raced to build towers, once seventy-two, of which fourteen survive to form a 'medieval Manhattan' skyline. The old town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, keeps a thirteenth-century character around Cistern and Cathedral Squares, and is famed for Vernaccia wine and its gelato shops and wine cellars.
