Aktau is the capital of Mangystau Region in southwestern Kazakhstan and the country's only city lying directly on the Caspian Sea coast. It stands on chalk cliffs 20 to 50 metres high and takes its name from the white cliffs. The Caspian's water is less salty than the ocean, warming to over 20°C in summer, while public beaches, beach clubs, kitesurfing and paddleboarding line the shore. Aktau is also the hub for the surreal Mangystau plateau, with limestone canyons and salt lakes, and landmark monuments such as the MiG-21.
