Baikonur in western Kazakhstan adjoins the cosmodrome named after it. Built in 1955 by the Soviet Union, it became spaceflight's birthplace when Gagarin launched from here in 1961, and remains Russia's only crewed launch site. Visitors with permits can tour launch pads and the space museum, rocket launches the ultimate experience, the whole town steeped in a Space Age atmosphere.
