Sa Pa lies in the Hoàng Liên Sơn range of northwestern Vietnam, at about 1,500 meters above sea level, with a cool and pleasant climate — a rare mountain retreat from the sweltering Vietnamese lowlands. Most moving here are the layered terraced rice fields, stretching and undulating along the valleys, most spectacular in September and October when the rice ears turn golden. Nearby is Fansipan, the highest peak of the Indochinese Peninsula; a cable car takes you straight to the summit to overlook the vast sea of clouds. Ethnic minorities such as the Hmong and Dao have lived here for generations; the colorful traditional costumes and silver ornaments in Cat Cat Village and the markets are full of exotic charm. The cloud-wrapped terraces, the cool air and the rustic mountain villages make Sa Pa a hidden gem of northwestern Vietnam.
