Ulaanbaatar Travel Guide

Ulaanbaatar is the capital of Mongolia, by the Tuul River on the Mongolian Plateau at about 1,300 m, one of the world's coldest capitals (long frigid winters, short cool summers), and the gateway to journeys exploring the steppe, Gobi and nomadic culture; the climate is best in summer, Jun-Sep, and the Naadam festival is held in July. The city blends nomadic tradition with modern urban life and Soviet legacies: downtown towers, malls and Soviet buildings coexist, while traditional ger districts spread over the outer hillsides. Its core is the solemn Chinggis Khaan Square (with a giant statue of Genghis Khan before the Government Palace). The most important religious sanctuary is Gandan Monastery—Mongolia's largest Tibetan Buddhist monastery, housing a gilded ~26 m statue of Avalokiteshvara (please visit with respect and modest dress). There is also the National History Museum and the Bogd Khan Palace. Winter is extremely cold, summer cool with big temperature swings—pack warm clothing.
