Shirakawa-go, at the foot of Mount Hakusan in Gifu, is among Japan's most celebrated World Heritage villages. Its gassho-zaku farmhouses, with steep 60-degree thatched roofs built to shed some of the world's heaviest snow, were listed with Gokayama in 1995. Over a hundred line the valley; the glowing winter light-up is Japan's most romantic scene, and soba and washi are local crafts.
