Noboribetsu lies in southwestern Hokkaido, the island's most famous hot-spring resort. In the volcanic Jigokudani 'hell valley', steam rises from underground and a trail reveals fifteen sources, chiefly sulphur and salt springs. A bear park shows Hokkaido's brown bears and an Edo-period village recreates old Japan.
