Mimosusogawa Park
Mimosusogawa Park in Shimonoseki, Yamaguchi, stands on the site of the Battle of Dan-no-ura that closed the Genpei War. It faces the narrowest stretch of the Kanmon Strait, where swift currents let you watch passing ships up close alongside the 1,068-metre Kanmon Bridge. Statues of Minamoto no Yoshitsune and Taira no Tomomori and a poem monument to the nun Niidono line the grounds, together with five life-size replicas of Choshu cannons—one firing sound and smoke on the hour from 9:00 to 17:00 for JPY 100. Free kamishibai history shows run 10:00-15:00 (with rest days). The park is open around the clock and free.

Sumiyoshi Shrine
Sumiyoshi Shrine in Ichinomiya Sumiyoshi, Shimonoseki, was the ichinomiya of Nagato Province and ranks with Osaka's Sumiyoshi Taisha and Hakata's Sumiyoshi Shrine as one of Japan's three great Sumiyoshi shrines. The Nihon Shoki records its founding after Empress Jingu's campaign; the National Treasure main hall was rebuilt by Ouchi Hiroyo in 1370, and the worship hall was donated by Mori Motonari in 1539.

KAIKYO YUME TOWER
Kaikyo Yume Tower rises on the Honshu side at Shimonoseki, beside JR Shimonoseki Station rather than at Moji-ko. Completed in 1996, it stands 153 metres tall and is capped at 143 metres by a spherical all-glass observatory, the first of its kind in the world and the tallest free-standing tower in western Japan. A glass lift takes 40 seconds to the top, where a 360-degree view takes in cargo traffic on the Kanmon Strait, the Kanmon Bridge, Moji-ko across the water and, on clear days, Tsunoshima. After dark, 611 lamps light the tower in a colour that changes by weekday, making it the most visible landmark in the city's night skyline. The 28th floor holds a matchmaking shrine and the Bell of the Future, part of the 2006 designation as Yamaguchi's first Lovers' Sanctuary, while the 29th has a sky restaurant. Below are Kaikyo Messe and the Buzenda dining streets, and Karato Market, Akama Shrine and the Ganryu-jima ferry all sit on the same walking route.

Kozan-ji Temple
Kozan-ji stands at the far end of the castle town of Chofu in Shimonoseki, the family temple of the Chofu Mori clan. Founded in 1327 as a Soto Zen monastery under the name Chofuku-ji, it was renamed when it became the mortuary temple of Mori Hidemoto, founder of the Chofu domain. Its greatest possession is the national-treasure Buddha hall: ink inscriptions on the pillars date it to around 1320, making it the oldest dated building in the Zen (karayo) style in Japan. Three bays square with a surrounding skirt roof, hip-and-gable with cypress-bark roofing, it houses a seated Thousand-Armed Kannon and was designated a national treasure in 1953. Its power lies in restrained proportion and deep eaves rather than painted ornament, and it is the clearest surviving lesson in Kamakura karayo. The temple's other half belongs to the end of the shogunate: in the twelfth month of Genji 1 (1865), Takasugi Shinsaku raised some eighty men here, the 'Kozan-ji uprising' that turned Choshu toward the overthrow of the bakufu and opened the road to the Meiji Restoration. An equestrian statue of Takasugi stands in the grounds, and the stone steps below the gate are the ones his men charged down. The shoin's 'chamber of the five court nobles' is where Sanjo Sanetomi and four others stayed after being driven from Kyoto and met Takasugi; JPY 300 admits you to it and the garden. Cherry blossom in spring and late-November maple colour set off the old hall beautifully, and with the Chofu Mori residence, Chofu Garden and Kakuen-ji nearby it makes a quiet half day of history.

Ganryu-jima Island
Ganryu-jima is officially Funashima, a flat, uninhabited island in the Kanmon Strait with a 1.6 km shoreline and a highest point under ten metres. It is famous for one event: on 13 April 1612 Miyamoto Musashi is said to have defeated Sasaki Kojiro, master of the 'Turning Swallow' cut, here with a wooden sword. The island's popular name honours the loser's school, Ganryu. The ground has changed since: reefs were blasted in the Taisho era and landfill later expanded the island to six times its duel-era size. A few minutes from the pier, the plaza holds facing bronze statues of the two swordsmen, unveiled in 2002 and 2003, the 1910 Sasaki Ganryu memorial and a literary stele; a recreated boat sits on the artificial beach below. There are toilets and a shelter but no shops or vending machines, swimming is banned, and there is no land link: the only way here is by ferry.

Shimonoseki Marine Science Museum Kaikyokan
Kaikyokan is formally the Shimonoseki Municipal Aquarium, run by the Shimonoseki Marine Science Academy on the Arcaport waterfront between Karato and the Kanmon Straits, with the theme 'life of the sea, the sea and life'. Shimonoseki grew out of the sea, and the museum returns to it: a vast tank reproduces the straits' racing tide, where shoals of sardines and horse mackerel coil into a silver vortex, while other galleries set the Japan Sea and the Seto Inland Sea side by side as quite different waters. The most local display is the fugu collection, where a strikingly varied range of pufferfish can be compared in one room; Shimonoseki is Japan's main fugu market, and a few steps away at Karato Market you can eat from the same supply. Humboldt penguins live in the penguin village, dolphins and sea lions perform to a daily timetable, and there are finless porpoises, turtles and deep-sea creatures. Current 2026 admission is JPY 2,500 for adults and high school students, JPY 1,200 for primary and junior high, JPY 500 from age three, with special experiences booked separately. Open 09:30-17:30, last entry 17:00, every day. From JR Shimonoseki take an ordinary Sanden bus on routes 10-24 for five minutes to Kaikyokan-mae, noting that express 121 and 127 do not stop there. Allow two or three hours, and combine the aquarium with Karato Market, Akama Shrine and a walk along the straits in one day.
