Nikko-shi Travel Guide

Kotoku Farm sits on the Okunikko highland along the Sanno Forest Road in Nikko, Tochigi. Founded in 1897 by Yoshida Tokusaburo, a settler who cleared the land at Nikko, it takes its name from the "light" of Nikko and Tokusaburo's "virtue". Tobu Kogyo reopened the farm on 1 July 2024, resuming Brown Swiss grazing for the first time in about five years, along with the Kotoku Corral restaurant and farm shop; freshly drawn milk and milk ice cream are the signatures. The viewing deck Kotoku-no-Oka looks toward Mount Nantai, and the farm is a handy rest stop on the way to Kotoku-numa and the Senjogahara marsh. Open roughly April to November, closed in winter; entry is free.

Yutaki Falls (湯滝) drops from the southern tip of Lake Yuno in the Okunikko district of Nikko, Tochigi. About 70 m high and 110 m long, it pours over a wall of Mitsudake lava that once dammed the Yugawa river to form the lake, and it ranks among Nikko's five celebrated waterfalls alongside Kegon, Kirifuri, Urami and Ryuzu. A viewing platform near the basin lets you feel the spray and thunder up close. Azaleas bloom in May–June and autumn colours peak in early-to-mid October, with sunlight striking the falls best between 11:00 and 13:00. It is about 80 minutes by bus from JR Nikko or Tobu-Nikko plus a 5-minute walk from Yutaki-iriguchi, and a waypoint on the Senjogahara hiking route. The falls close each year from early December to early April—check the status before visiting.

The Italian Embassy Villa Memorial Park sits by Lake Chuzenji in Nikko, reconstructing the early-20th-century summer villa of the Italian ambassador to Japan. The red-brick and stone Italianate building stands by the lake; from the garden you take in the water and mountains — an elegant remnant of Nikko's 'diplomats' summer retreat' history.

Irohazaka is the famed mountain road linking central Nikko with Lake Chuzenji, in two sections ('first' and 'second') totalling about 48 hairpin curves, its name from the 47-syllable iroha alphabet. Each autumn the maples blaze red and the switchbacks wind like ribbons through the hills — a top Kanto drive for foliage.

Ryuo Gorge lies on the upper Kinugawa in Nikko, a valley formed about 22 million years ago by volcanism, with strange rocks and waterfalls along both banks. The trail follows the river — green and cool in summer, fiery in autumn. From the Kawaji Onsen side it's about 40 minutes to the Ryuo Gorge iron bridge, a classic light hike paired with hot springs.

Known as Tachiki Kannon, Chuzen-ji was founded in 784 by the mountain ascetic Shodo Shonin and serves as a branch of the World Heritage Rinnai-ji temple complex and No.18 of the Bando 33 Kannon pilgrimage. Shodo is said to have carved a thousand-armed Kannon directly into a standing tree by the lake, the image still rooted in the earth — hence 'standing-tree Kannon'. The hall also enshrines Namikiri Daikokuten and Aizen Myoo. The Godaido hall is the classic Okunikko viewpoint, framing Lake Chuzenji and 2,486-metre Mt Nantai, at its best in the mid-October to early-November maple season. Behind the hall, a quiet path past thirty-three Kannon stone figures makes a contemplative add-on.
