Hoi An sits on the Thu Bon River in central Vietnam, a well-preserved ancient trading port, listed as a World Heritage Site. From the 15th to 19th centuries it was a prosperous international port where Chinese, Japanese and Vietnamese cultures blended, leaving yellow-walled old houses, exquisite assembly halls and the ancient Japanese Covered Bridge. The ancient town has no high-rises, only weathered shops, tailor shops and cafes. At night, thousands of silk lanterns light the streets, and the Thu Bon River fills with wish lanterns, their reflections rippling, dreamlike. This simplicity and romance make Hoi An Vietnam's most charming ancient town.
