Morro Bay, a fishing town on California's central coast on Estero Bay, is dominated by Morro Rock, a 175-meter volcanic plug rising from the sea, one of a chain of ancient volcanoes once sacred to the Chumash. Its embankment is lined with fishing boats and seafood restaurants famed for rockfish, crab and oysters. The Monterey sanctuary is superb for sea otters and gray whales.
