No.1 Socorro
Trinity Site
The Trinity Site, located within the White Sands Missile Range near Socorro, New Mexico, is the exact location where the world's first atomic bomb was detonated on July 16, 1945, marking the dawn of the nuclear age. Named after the Trinity code name, the site was where J. Robert Oppenheimer's Manhattan Project completed the historic test that changed the world. The detonation produced explosive force equivalent to 20,000 tons of TNT, vaporizing a 30-meter steel tower, creating a shallow crater approximately 6 meters in diameter, and melting the surrounding desert sand into pale green glass-like material known as Trinitite. Today the site preserves the ground zero monument, samples of Trinitite, and the remnants of the vaporized tower base. Open to the public only twice a year, on the first Saturdays of April and October, it draws nuclear history enthusiasts and visitors reflecting on peace. The site stands as both a monument to scientific breakthrough and a warning of humanity's destructive capacity, carrying profound and complex historical significance.

No.2 Socorro
Very Large Array (VLA)
The Very Large Array (VLA), located on the Plains of San Agustin west of Socorro, New Mexico, is one of the world's most influential radio astronomy facilities. It consists of 27 parabolic dish antennas, each 25 meters in diameter, arranged in a Y-shape along three 21-kilometer rail tracks. By moving along these tracks, the antennas combine to form a giant telescope with an effective diameter of up to 36 kilometers. Operated by the National Radio Astronomy Observatory since 1980, the VLA has made groundbreaking discoveries about quasars, pulsars, black holes, galaxy formation, and cosmic magnetic fields. It gained popular fame through Carl Sagan's novel Contact and its film adaptation. The visitor center offers exhibits, documentary screenings, and a self-guided walking tour, allowing the public to experience cutting-edge astronomy firsthand.
