Coast Starlight
No.1 Seattle
Coast Starlight
The Coast Starlight is one of Amtrak's most celebrated long-distance trains, running the length of the U.S. West Coast from Seattle through Portland and the San Francisco Bay Area down to Los Angeles — about 35 hours and over 2,000 km. Its Sightseer Lounge car with floor-to-ceiling windows frames the Cascade peaks, Pacific coastline and California wine country. Sleeping compartments and a dining car let you travel in comfort and skip the driving fatigue — a classic way to savour "slow travel" and North American rail culture. Book ahead and try to ride the Oregon and California coastal stretches by daylight.

Square & Landmark
Gas Works Park
No.3 Seattle
Gas Works Park
Gas Works Park sits on the north shore of Seattle's Lake Union, built on the site of a derelict 19th-century gas plant — a model of industrial-ruin park design. Massive rusted reactors, pipes and gas holders are preserved and painted in vivid colours, creating a raw, distinctive contrast with the green lawns, and a favourite spot for photography and picnics. The lakeside path frames the downtown skyline and is popular for kite-flying, sunsets and the 4th of July fireworks. Designed by Richard Haag, it has won numerous awards for its "keep the industrial memory" approach to urban renewal.
