Millennium Park is Chicago's best-known public space, covering about 24.5 acres at the north end of Grant Park on the shore of Lake Michigan. It opened on July 16, 2004 - four years behind schedule, yet named for the millennium it had just missed. Its centerpiece is Cloud Gate, the stainless steel sculpture nicknamed The Bean by British-Indian artist Anish Kapoor: 110 tons, 66 feet long and 33 feet high, built from seamlessly joined polished plates that reflect the skyline, the clouds and the crowds. You can walk through its 12-foot arch into the concave chamber underneath, where your reflection fragments overhead. The interactive counterpoint is Jaume Plensa's Crown Fountain: two 50-foot glass-brick towers that cycle video portraits of about 1,000 real Chicagoans, commissioned with the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and the Chicago Architecture Foundation, then spit water into the reflecting pool. In summer it doubles as one of the city's best free splash pads; in winter the faces keep playing but the water shuts off. Frank Gehry's Jay Pritzker Pavilion anchors the Great Lawn and hosts free concerts and the Grant Park Music Festival mainly from June to August, with picnic blankets welcome. The Lurie Garden to the northwest is about 3.5 acres planted in the Chicago Prairie School idiom and is the quietest corner of the park. Gehry's BP Pedestrian Bridge links across Columbus Drive to Maggie Daley Park. Seasonal changes are worth checking: the Lurie Garden was closed from March 2 to early July 2026 for repairs to its Seam boardwalk and water feature, and the Pritzker Pavilion trellis was also under renovation. The McCormick Tribune ice rink runs from mid-November to early March, turning into an outdoor cafe in warmer months.

Buckingham Fountain - the Clarence F. Buckingham Memorial Fountain - is the great circular fountain at the centre of Grant Park, at Columbus Drive and Congress Parkway, long regarded as Chicago's "front door". Kate S. Buckingham funded it with $750,000 in 1927 as a memorial to her brother Clarence; architect Edward H. Bennett designed it and the French sculptor Marcel F. Loyau made the figures. It was formally dedicated on August 26, 1927 before some 50,000 people. Built of pink Georgia marble and bronze in a tiered Rococo "wedding cake" form modelled on the Latona Fountain at Versailles, the fountain allegorises the adjacent Lake Michigan. Its central jet reaches 150 feet (about 46 m) during a display, and eight bronze seahorses in four sets stand for the four lake states: Illinois, Wisconsin, Michigan and Indiana. It normally runs from early May to mid-October, 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. daily, with a 20-minute major display every hour on the hour from 9:00 a.m.; after dusk 820 lights add a music show, with the last display at 10:35 p.m. and shutdown near 10:55 p.m. The fountain is closed in winter but dressed in festival lights. From May 30, 2026, 100 movable chairs ring the basin through September. It is free to visit and sits on the classic walking route between the Art Institute, Shedd Aquarium and Millennium Park.

The Art Institute of Chicago was founded in 1879 as the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts, renamed in 1882, and still operates as both a museum and a school. Its present home at 111 South Michigan Avenue was designed by the Boston firm Shepley, Rutan & Coolidge in the Beaux-Arts style for the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition and opened on December 8, 1893. The two bronze lions at the Michigan Avenue entrance were sculpted by Edward Kemeys and unveiled in 1894, each weighing over two tons, and are among Chicago's best-known city symbols; they wear team jerseys during championship seasons. The collection of nearly 300,000 works spans 5,000 years of human expression and is especially celebrated for Impressionism and Post-Impressionism, including 33 paintings by Monet - the largest collection outside Paris, with six Haystacks and several Water Lilies - plus 13 drawings. Core works are Seurat's pointillist A Sunday on La Grande Jatte, Caillebotte's Paris Street; Rainy Day, Matisse's Batters by a River, Van Gogh's Bedroom in Arles, Picasso's The Old Guitarist, and the American icons Hopper's Nighthawks and Wood's American Gothic. Renzo Piano's Modern Wing opened on May 16, 2009 with galleries for 20th- and 21st-century art, modern European painting and sculpture, photography, architecture and design. Enter from the Michigan Avenue doors or the Modern Wing entrance at 159 E Monroe St; 10-11 a.m. daily is members-only, public admission starts at 11:00, the museum is closed Tuesdays and stays open until 8 p.m. on Thursdays. Admission is priced by residence, and Illinois residents visit free during selected Thursday evenings and winter weekdays.

Cloud Gate is the most famous public sculpture in Chicago's Millennium Park, designed by British-Indian artist Anish Kapoor and installed in 2006. Affectionately called The Bean for its bean-like shape, the sculpture is built from 168 stainless steel plates welded and polished to a seamless mirror finish, standing about 10 meters high and weighing 110 tons. Its surface reflects the Chicago skyline, sky and visitors, while the 2.7-meter concave omphalos at the base funnels distorted reflections into a kaleidoscopic visual experience. Visitors can walk around and beneath the sculpture, watching the city and sky shift in the reflection from every angle, making it a must-see for photographers. Anchoring Millennium Park alongside Crown Fountain and the Lurie Garden, Cloud Gate is the centerpiece of Chicago's contemporary public art and draws more than ten million visitors a year for photos.

Willis Tower (formerly Sears Tower), built in 1973, rises about 442 m over 108 floors and was long the world's tallest—a symbol of Chicago's skyline. The 103rd-floor Skydeck overlooks the city, Lake Michigan and three states beyond; the glass 'Ledge' boxes jut out so visitors stand on transparent floors hundreds of meters up—thrilling and photogenic. On clear days the summit view is superb, a top vantage for Chicago.

Navy Pier is a century-old pleasure pier jutting into Lake Michigan, opened in 1916 and now Chicago's most popular lakefront leisure spot. Its iconic Centennial Wheel turns slowly, lifting riders for lake and skyline views; the pier holds restaurants, theatres, a children's museum and cruise docks, plus summer fireworks. From here, lake and architecture cruises depart, offering the skyline from the water—great for families and casual outings.
